Is critical thinking taught or learned?
What makes a person a critical thinker?
Dispositions: Critical thinkers are skeptical, open-minded, value fair-mindedness, respect evidence and reasoning, respect clarity and precision, look at different points of view, and will change positions when reason leads them to do so. These characteristics are part of the process of rational, goal or objective oriented thinking.
Definition of Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is a learned ability that must be taught. And practiced. Most individuals never learn it. Critical thinking cannot be taught reliably to individuals by peers. Trained and knowledgeable instructors and mentors are necessary to impart the proper information and skills.
If taught well, there is transferability of that critical thought process across topics and situations. The lack of it often results from the missing positive reinforcement that produces, practice, failure, learning and success.
Management too often focuses on a “results now” attitude that stifles asking questions which then lead to new answers and solutions.
You know, the fixed mindset vs. the growth mindset. We need more of the latter, along with a big dose of resilience and customer centricity, to meet those “pain point” needs and “must haves” customers face daily.
How great is the gap between where you and your teams are today and where your productivity levels and talent retention can be in this year’s second half? How willing are you to work with a partner to practice critical thinking and all that accrues from it?
