Content Creators: Just Pay the Man (or Woman)
Hire the best and most seasoned writers and editors you can find. They WILL be more expensive than others, but in this case, you absolutely get what you pay for.
If you are committed to B2B marketing excellence, and in particular if you’re content marketing flavor is brand builder or thought leader, creating truly remarkable content should be your first priority. Only 99th percentile content creators can do that for you. Stop looking for and working with the cheap content creators, and bring on the best to develop the content that will break through the clutter.
Now here’s the sad, frustrating part of the process. Last year, two colleagues engaged two different but well-known national subscription-based inbound marketing services who will not be named here. The two B2B company leaders and their companies are in vastly different market segments and have entirely different buyer personas.
- They were charged with generating and distributing quality content as the primary driver of new leads into the lead gen pipeline.
- They were paid a healthy monthly fee.
- They were given well-defined parameters for the types of content.
- After six months, guess how many verified leads were delivered?
- Exactly zero!
Is there a lesson here? There are actually two takeaways; first, national content factories have challenges (internal – churn and limited talent) and second, they are a good match for companies that need a broad reach. They are not doing well with niche B2B marketers.
The other sad story involves the process of using recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) to recruit and on board full-time marketing skills sets that match a job posting that includes content strategy, content production and channel management.
- What you get as a result is limited experience marketing professionals who can be hired for not a lot of money.
- You get a stream of content outflow that is wrapped in declining productivity even as the individual rises to a point where they can see their targeted audiences.
- The stream is actually a lot like “pi**ing in the wind”.
- 24 months later, your content production machine is gone – recruited to another company.
What are your options?
